Helping with Homework at Primary School

Ahh, homework, none of us loved it, and all of us have had to do it at some point. What’s important when your child is at primary school, is understanding the type of homework that they will be given, and how you can best help with it, without becoming overbearing, and actually doing most of the homework on their behalf.

Unsurprisingly, the amount of homework will become more substantial, and the difficulty higher, as your little one moves up through the years at primary school. Tasks in the first few terms are likely to consist of very basic writing or spelling tasks (if there is any homework at all). Your involvement in this homework is expected to be limited to observing, and making sure that it’s actually done.

Things will become a tad more complicated later on. All sorts of complex homework ideas exist, and you’ll find that plenty of teachers are keen to try them out on your little one. As far as possible, follow the teacher’s guidance, as to just how much help and support you should be looking to offer. Don’t feel afraid to contact them directly, and ask questions if this is useful. Most will be more than happy to give you a steer in the right direction, since, at the end of the day, you are helping them to do a better job of teaching your child.

Above all, resist the temptation to do too much of the homework yourself. You won’t be doing anyone any favours!
